Borneo & Indonesia

Sabah - route

Our journey starts at Kota Kinabalu on 30th Nov 2016. We collected our Sorento from the Kota Kinabalu port and headed straight out north towards Kudat. We would leave our tour of KK city to a later date as we will be circling back to spend X'mas in the city.

Our trip in Sabah takes us through the towns of Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Tawau, Kundasang before heading back to Kota Kinabalu for Christmas. Soon after Christmas we made our way to Sipitang before crossing the border to Brunei.

Tips:
1. Seafood
Seafood are fresh in Sabah. Fancy cooking your own seafood dinner? Then, head to the local market where you can find an assortment of fresh seafood.
In Kudat, take a short driver to the Tip of Borneo where you will find a nice picnic spot on the beach. In Tawau, pack your fresh seafood and head to Tawau Hill Park where you will find lots of spot to BBQ. Don't be in a hurry to leave the park, ??? monkeys will pass through the picnic area on their way home in the evening. So hang around to catch a glimpse of them.

Ferry crossing:
Ferry schedules are only available a few weeks in advance. Passenger ferries make more frequent trips and are easily available at major cities. Vehicle ferry make less frequent trip and a week or more can pass before one is available.

If you plan to transport your car, then it's best to make a booking in advance. Vehicle ferry mostly cater to lorries carrying cargoes interisland and ferry operators will squeeze in as many lorries as they can. At peak, only the bow area of the ferry is available for smaller vehicles. Hence, it is best to book your spot early. You will not need to make any payment usually. Instead, you will be put on a waitlist and confirmation will usually take place a day before sailing.
