Italy - Slovenia Border to Udine

We leave Slovenia today to travel for a few days through northern Italy before we cross into Switzerland.

Driving on the Route 102 / SS54 to the Slovenia / Italy border along River Natisone

The border not too far away now..

Welcome to Italy!
No border controls and formalities to go through since both Slovenia and Italy are in the EU.

Light drizzle still continues... just glad that we could still enjoy the view

Driving pass Stupizza... roads can be narrow in the village area with the walls of the houses right at the edges of the road.

One of a couple of tunnels along this stretch of road from the border to Loch / Linder

Driving pass the village of Loch / Linder in Pulfero Municipality

Cividale del Friuli

This small town less than 20km east of the city of Udine, was a nice stop as we make our way to Udine

Spotted a parking spot for Our Sorento further up.

Our Sorento parked next to a bakery

The Porta Del Arsenale Veneto, a large stone gate marking the entrance into the old town.
This is the Borgo San Pietro Street. In the past, this was the main entry route into the town for people coming from the west. The village was contained within the Venetian town walls. Some parts of the town dates back to the early Middle Ages.

Chiesa di San Pietro ai Volti... Church of St Peter near the old gate.

Dad reading the board on Borgo San Pietro street

Leaving Cividale Del Friuli town

Back on SS54 heading west to Udine city

Udine

Udine is an ancient Venetian town.

Making our way to Udine city centre.

It was siesta time when we arrive in the city centre. It was easy to find a parking spot near the foot of the hill where the church and castle stood. We had some trouble deciphering the parking notice board but we figured that there were no charges during siesta time.

Chiesa di Santa Maria al Castello (Church of Santa Maria in Castello)

The front entrance of the  Church of Santa Maria in Castello.
This is the oldest sacred building in Udine and was built on an ancient site thought to have existed in the 8th century.

The bell tower and the back of the church.

The angel on the steeple of the Church of Santa Maria in Castello.

Some info the Church of Santa Maria in Castello.

Loggia del Lippomano and Udine Castle

Mum and dad at Loggia del Lippomano.

The arches of Loggia del Lippomano leading to the castle.

Magnificent Frescoes

Another one..

The Clock Tower seen from the arches.
It was built around the 1400s and renovated several times later.

The front of the Castle.. the building itself is not as impressive as the walk leading to the castle.
Legend has it that Attila the Hun had his soldier build the hill where the castle sits.

The original Castle was destroyed in an earthquake in the early 1500s. It was rebuilt in 1517 and the castle is renaissance due to several renovation works done. In the olden days it was the Parliament House which is the oldest one in Europe. Now it is a museum.

Piazza Della Liberta

The Piazza was built around the 1100s and over the centuries it has gone through several extensions.

The Porch of Saint Giovanni and the statues of Ercole and Caco (also known as Florean and Venturin) dating back to the late 17th century.

The Porch of Saint Giovanni

The Lion of Saint Mark Column. It was once removed by the French Rulers in 1797 and re-located in 1843.
The fountain designed by Giovanni Carrara in 1542

Row of shops near Piazza Della Liberta

Loggia Del Lionello

The Town Hall of Udine situated in Piazza Della Liberta was originally built around 1350 and redesigned in 1400s. A fire in the 1800s destroyed the building and it was subsequently rebuilt. The architecture of the building is Venetian gothic style.

Statue of Virgin Mary and Child dates back to the 1400s.

Building next to the Town hall

Museo Del Duomo / Cathedral of Udine

The Cathedral was built in the 1200s as a place of worship. In the 18th century, the place was transformed and renamed Santa Maria Annunziata.

The Bell Tower of the Cathedral

Chiesa Di Sant Antonio

Built in 1354, the church is part of a wider complex comprising a hospital and a cemetary
