We left Verona to make our way to the city of Milan. On the way, we stopped at Brescia for lunch and a visit to Crespi d'Adda, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
We left Brescia after lunch and travelled west, avoiding the highway and were on smaller roads passing through towns such as Palosco, Spirano etc before reaching Crespi d'Adda.
Crespi d'Adda is a small village located on Adda river, about 50 km northeast of Milan. The village is a historic settlement built by the Crespi family in the late 19th century to house the many workers for their textile mill. The self-contained village was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
The Crespi Castle, the main villa and summer residence of the Crespi family, was built between 1893 and 1894.
The textile mill which is the heart of this village started production in July 1878 making textiles mostly for export. The factory stopped production in 2004.
Though it looks like a War cemetery, it's not...
This is the Crespi Cemetery situated at the southern end of the town's main street.
The mausoleum towers over the cemetery and houses the graves of the Crespi family.
The cemetary was completed in 1908. These are the graves of the workers / inhabitants of this town.
We left Crespi d' Adda in the evening and made our way to Milan.
