From a hunting ground with a royal lodge to a small palace used by the French royals as a getaway in the early 1620s King Louis XIV was inspired to transform the small Palace to what is now the famous Palace of Versailles on the very site he hunted and lodged in Versailles. In the 1680s he moved the aristocracy to Versailles, making it his permanent residence and laying the foundation for the palace as seen today making it into one of the most visited monument in France

The whole area of Palace of Versailles was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. : It became the principal residence of the French kings for over a century.” Built, designed and decorated by several generations of architects, sculptors, decorators and landscape architects. Marie Antoinette's fantasy hamlet was built in the palace Gardens where she passed her time dress as a peasant and romanticize the idea of a simpler life before returning to her gilded apartments.
