We left Kargil War Memorial at 10am and continued our drive east on the Srinagar- Leh Highway. We have a distance of 282km to reach Leh but it would be a two day leisurely drive to Leh. The stretch of road from Kargil to Leh has a lot of interesting sights and unique landscape to take in. We will also be passing through the two highest passes on the Srinagar- Leh Highway, namely the Namika La and the Fotu La. In this post, we will cover the stretch from Dras to the village of Mulbekh in Kargil.
Driving along Dras River in Dras Valley.
Dras River is a glacier fed river originating from the Machoi Glacier near Zojila Pass. The Dras River flows northeast for 86kms.

Kargil
Kargil Town is the second biggest in Ladakh, after Leh.
Kargil is at an elevation of 2,700m above sea level.
We registered our details at a Police checkpoint just outside Kargil Town and paid the vehicle entry fee of 20 Rupees.
Welcome to Kargil!
We went round to buy some groceries and fruits (pears and pomegranate). We also had our lunch of paratha, lentils, aubergine and omelette.
